Not sure where the hotel Mar de Cortez was, but it was the “all you can eat ribs” that attracted us to Baja Peppers.  We went in, ordered the ribs, ate and talked, and actually looked at the menu after dinner as an afterthought.  We knew we had to return.  We did, and it WAS worth it!  Three hours later, as we kind of stumbled out, four of us eeked out a moan, and enough was said.

When we went for the ribs a week or so back, we sat on the far side of the facility’s bar, overlooking the swimming pool for the hotel.  It was comfortable, and the food delicious.  This time, we sat in a much smaller, inside room, the real restaurant if you will, that only had about 6 tables, but large enough for parties of 8 or more, if needed.  “Quaint” is the word that comes to mind or maybe “intimate” is more descriptive.

This time, we went the gambit.  When asked to order I simply said, “Bring it on!”.  We started with hors d’oeuvres consisting of calamari sauteed in a spicy tomato sauce, then lemon prawns, on to carpaccio-which was to die for-and then mussels that were a special that evening.  The entrees followed and consisted of ravioli de gamberi, chicken parmigiana, osso bucco, filet mignon that really could be cut with a fork, lasagna and gnocchi. (How do you get 6 entrees for only four people???) I am telling you, we must have looked like kids sharing candy in a candy store, as plates and/or forks kept moving around the table…almost like musical chairs, and each time a plate was emptied, it was retired but something else always replaced it…Oh my God, not only was everything extraordinary, but it almost appeared to be never ending…how do they do that…

Did anyone say dessert?  By the time dessert came around, I don’t think any of us were starving anymore but we were there to give it our best shot, so needless to say, flan with a strawberry sauce and cheesecake were brought out. Wow!

The menu gives a brief description of each item such as the ravioli de gamberi being shrimp ravioli in a delicious shrimp sauce, but the desserts only had their name.  My suggestion is that they describe their desserts because they are terrific.  I am not usually a flan lover, but this version has changed my thinking…not to say that the cheesecake was perhaps, the best I have ever had.  I really wanted to try the tiramisu, but just didn’t have anything left in me at the end.

I did, however, find the necessary strength to try some of their tequila, specially brought in (in a jug) from Guadalajara.  Many of you may know that I am a lover of Mexican spirits, hence our “Signature” CaboRicardo margarita, but this special tequila was really extraordinary.

What I didn’t mention is that their menu also includes an array of Mexican dishes, but we were just too enthralled in the Italian dishes to even try them.

Clearly, all four of us gave Baja Peppers a full thumbs up and there wasn’t even a hiccup anywhere.  Their service was excellent, their dining area beautiful, their wine list quite impressive, and their food, yes their food, was incredible.  I didn’t mention anything about their prices, but the Mar de Cortez is up on the town side of Cabo Wabo by less than a block.  Some could consider this getting close to the edge of town, and maybe that is why the prices are considerably lower than most.  This is to all of our benefit, as Baja Peppers is only a year old and they are still growing their restaurant.
