Vagabundos Del Mar Restaurant
Vagabundos Del Mar…what the hell is that? let me see…Even with my vast (I AM kidding) knowledge of Spanish, I wasn’t sure, so I resorted to the Google translator. The word Vagabundos means “homeless” but I can tell you what it really means in this instance….and that is Great Food, at reasonable prices, in an atmosphere that is active but comfortable.
This very accommodating restaurant sits inside of a trailer park, yes actually a beautiful trailer park, but don’t let your mind drift off too far, you will really like this place. On top of that, the food is comparable to many of the “downtown” restaurants, but with prices that will keep you coming back.
I found their menu a bit, well, unique is a good term, but once you get used to it, you’ll find an excellent assortment of appetizers, entrees, and desserts from a taco platter with condiments that keep on ‘keeping on’ to a key lime pie that is so refreshing, you just may want another. The menu goes on and on to something they call Trankiki Chubi Chubi. What is it you ask…well, IT is GOOD! It’s actually a good size piece of dorado (Mahi Mahi for all you ‘out of the know’ gringos), cooked and served in a tin bag. Yes, you heard it right. The bag is filled with Vagabundos’ delicious seasonings all kept and cooked inside with the fish. The bag gets opened by you at the table, to a delicate fillet of one of most delicious fish on earth, bathed in what Vagabundos does best…flavor! The menu goes on and on! I guess I didn’t mention their ribs…Oh my! Just don’t forget, after dinner, their desserts are an absolute “Must Try” and I mean it! If you go home without trying either their key lime pie or their caramel crepes, you will have done yourself a great disservice! Additionally, all of the ingredients for everything they make are fresh. Nothing comes out of a can, which is something most restaurants can’t honor.
Vagabundos is located across the 4 lane highway from Walmart. As I mentioned earlier, what may appear a bit strange is that this restaurant is inside of a trailer park. Believe it or not, this is one of two trailer parks that were in Cabo, and both were known for extraordinary dining, Cabo style. Cabo is the ideal place for outdoor dining, and although one of the trailer parks lost their lease and is now closed, Vagabundos not only provides outdoor dining, they do it in style.
The two owners are Joe De la Borbolla and Peter Cashmore. Joe brings to Vagabundos, a vast knowledge from many years in restaurant ownership and management. Peter’s expertise comes more from the bar and nightclub side with plenty of business savvy. Another great thing about these guys is that most of the time, at least one, if not both of them, are present at the restaurant. Many times, I have seen both of them there, and they themselves, add a bit of flavor to the facility. You will find them extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and quite accommodating.
Finally, last but not least is the bar. Margaritas are my choice of drink while in Cabo. I was informed by a guy whose name I won’t divulge, that the margaritas at Vagabundos are “great, wonderful, delicious, flavorful, superb, but also kind of on the strong side.” I was also told by the same individual (and Michael, you know who you are) that having two margaritas would do me in. After hearing this, I felt personally challenged, and by God, he was pretty much right on. They are “great, wonderful, delicious, flavorful, superb, but also kind of on the strong side”…I think I already said that. The good news is that I had no choice but to go back to Vagabundos on a more sober occasion, just for the food, so I could write this article. In case you are wondering, I won’t tell you how many margaritas I had the second time around…
All kidding aside, Vagabundos is a “Must Do” restaurant when in Cabo. There food is awesome, the staff is very helpful, and the experience is absolutely second to none. I promise, it is so good, you will return! Put it this way, I was in Cabo for the month of October, and after discovering Vagabundos, I was back four additional times. With all the fine dining available in Cabo, I would say this is a real accomplishment for a single restaurant. Maybe I’ll see you there!
