No Reason to Be Alarmed…

Dear Clients,

Recent events related to a security operation by federal and local police have, once again, unnecessarily alarmed visitors as well as homeowners in Cabo. The State Department certainly does not help with their uninformed over-reactions which exaggerate the facts and demonstrate a lack of expertise in these matters. Diplomacy is replaced by knee-jerk declarations.

In a country that is in the process of reaching the standards and expectations to which Americans and Canadians have become accustomed, things are not done according to what we would like to see but in a manner deemed necessary within the local environment. The presence of armed security forces contribute to the confidence in the population that the situation is under control and that security breaches will be responded to in an efficient and immediate manner.

Cabo’s security preparations for the upcoming G-20 Meeting include a show of force by local security forces including the Navy, Army as well as local, state and federal forces. Although also involved in infrequent crime prevention actions, these forces are primarily focused on increased security for that meeting and the preliminary visits by advance teams for that same meeting. In general, the local population feels safer, not alarmed by these actions. Visitors, unaccustomed to these displays of force are understandably but unjustifiably alarmed.

Similar displays of force are constantly viewed on television newscasts and police programs in the form of expressway chases and helicopters spot lighting up neighborhoods. Yet that same activity raises alarm when viewed in another country where ex-pats have chosen to spend parts of their lives. We, at CPM, live and work here and constantly monitor these situations to ensure the safety in the properties we manage.  If there is any cause for alarm we will notify you immediately.

As part of the security measures the Federal Police have instituted random traffic stops along the corridor and Highway 1.  It is, again, a show of force and may alarm people who do not expect it as they are fully armed and some have face masks to protect their idenity.  They are courteous and respectful to motorists.   If you have renters or guests arriving it would be a good idea to let them know ahead of time that these are routine checks for the added G20 security and to not be alarmed.  If they know it will be happening, they will not be surprised and alarmed.
